The Consul of the Republic of Turkey in Komotini, Mr. Aykut Unal, paid a ceremonial visit to the Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Christodoulos Topsides, on Monday, September 7, 2026, on the occasion of the renewal of his term of office at the Turkish Consulate in Komotini.

During the meeting, issues of common interest were discussed, with an emphasis on tourism, transport, connectivity, trade, as well as civil protection and public health issues concerning the wider cross-border area.

Particular reference was made to tourism, with Mr. Unal conveying to the Regional Governor the image of increased interest from Turkey in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in terms of tourist visits.

The meeting also raised issues related to border infrastructure and cross-border connectivity. In particular, the Regional Governor referred to the work currently underway at the Kipi Customs House, as well as the planning of interventions at the Kastanies Customs House, with funding of 15 million euros from the Region. Mr. Topsides underlined that the Region places particular emphasis on upgrading infrastructure and improving connectivity, with the aim of facilitating travel and transport, strengthening trade and tourism and, overall, supporting economic activity.

Finally, the focus of the discussion was on issues that require coordination and cooperation at a cross-border level, such as dealing with mosquitoes and managing issues related to zoonoses.

Regarding mosquito control, the Regional Governor referred to the extensive program implemented by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, using ground and aerial applications. At the same time, reference was made to the need for coordination and exchange of information on zoonoses.

Mr. Aykut Unal expressed his intention to contribute, within the framework of his institutional role, to strengthening communication and coordination with the competent authorities, services and bodies of Turkey, where this is deemed necessary.

For his part, the Regional Governor stressed the importance of maintaining open channels of communication and cooperation between the competent institutional bodies, for the benefit of citizens, economic activity and development.
