Return of sick students from the 3rd General Lyceum of Komotini

During the educational trip of the 3rd General Lyceum of Komotini to Athens for the purpose of visiting the “Hellenic Parliament” (24/11/2016 to 27/11/2016), more than 2/3 of a total of 100 students needed to be hospitalized in the hospitals on duty in the capital at different times. Specifically, the students, showing symptoms of food poisoning, were hospitalized in order of duty at Sismanoglio, General Athens, Georgios Gennimatas and Ippokrateio. The causes of this unfortunate incident are being investigated following an ex officio prosecutorial order by the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office as part of a preliminary examination.
The need to return the students by air, whether they fell ill and were hospitalized or were treated as short-term hospitalization cases in the emergency departments of the hospitals, arose immediately and urgently, as it was deemed necessary to treat them all, as a single emergency.
For the smooth outcome of the developments and the safe return of the students to their homes as well as the appropriate care, all the local community bodies cooperated, convened in an emergency meeting by the Deputy Regional Governor of the Rhodopes Region on Sunday, November 27. The collectiveness and coordination of the effort to return the students safely to their homes was prioritized, while the offer of the airline AEGEAN AIRLINES and the representatives of Sidiropoulou Irini and Sadopoulos Stefanos, as well as the company ETPA PACKAGING AEEE (ETPA Packaging), who seemed worthy of the expectations of solidarity by reducing the transportation costs and assuming this cost in full, respectively, is decisive.
As the sub-region of Rodopi, we extend our warmest thanks primarily to the parents for the calmness and willingness to cooperate that they demonstrated, as well as to the directly acting local bodies, MPs Mr. Ilhan Ahmet and Mr. Mustafa Mustafa, Regional Governor of AMTH Mr. Christos Metios, Regional Director of Education of AMTH Mr. Panagiotis Keramaris, Director of Secondary Education of Rodopi Ms. Mary-Marigoula Kosmidou, Vice President of Komotini Hospital, owner of the travel agency that was responsible for transporting the students Ms. Christina Vergidou, and we wish the students a speedy recovery.
