
An important step for the upgrade of health services in Samothrace is the signing of the contract for the restart of the project to upgrade the island's Health Center, which took place in the context of the visit of the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Mr. Christodoulos Topsides, to Samothrace, on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
With the systematic actions of the administration of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in collaboration with the 4th Regional Health Directorate of Macedonia - Thrace and the Municipalities of Samothrace and Alexandroupoli, the way is being opened for the implementation of an extremely important intervention that substantially upgrades public health services on the island.
The signing of the contract took place in the presence of the Deputy Governor of the Evros Regional State Administration, Mr. Vangelis Poulilios, the Mayor of Samothrace, Mr. Athanasios Vitsas, the Governor of the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Mr. Vangelis Roufos, the Deputy Mayor of Daily Life, Technical Services & Urban Planning of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, Mr. Ioannis Naitidis, and a representative of the contractor company that will undertake the project.
With the signing of the contract, the project now enters the implementation phase, stated the Regional Governor, Mr. Christodoulos Topsides, who thanked everyone for the cooperation and expressed his satisfaction with the start of execution of a project "which will offer security, modern health services and immediate care to our border island of Samothrace."
With the updating of the study and the securing of funding through the "Eastern Macedonia and Thrace 2021-2027" Program, the budget for the upgrade project of the Samothrace Health Center increased from 1.034.170,07 euros to 3.000.183,57 euros, which allowed for its re-tendering and definitive restart.
The project includes the complete renovation and expansion of the Health Center, the static reinforcement of the building, the supply of new medical and hotel equipment, as well as a new radiological machine, creating a modern and fully equipped Health Center for the residents and visitors of Samothrace.
At the same time, through the "Eastern Macedonia and Thrace 2021-2027" Program, funding for the restoration of the infrastructure of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods is progressing, with a budget of 2.504.700 euros. The Regional Governor, Mr. Christodoulos Topsidis, visited the archaeological site and the museum, noting that "the Region ensures the protection and sustainable development of one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, which suffered significant damage from the extreme weather events of 2017. The goal is to protect the monument, ensure safe access for visitors and strengthen the cultural and tourist identity of Samothrace through a comprehensive intervention."
During his visit to Samothrace, the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace also referred to a series of other projects and actions funded by the Region, such as the studies, amounting to 247.000 euros, for the construction of new classrooms and a multi-purpose room at the Kamariotissa Primary School, the repair and maintenance of the road network, the certification study of the mountain trails of Samothrace, the cleaning work of the hot water wells in Therma, Municipality of Samothrace, etc.
During his visit, the Regional Governor had the opportunity to meet and talk with residents, professionals, representatives of institutions and employees of the island, listening closely to their needs, concerns and suggestions. As he stressed, direct contact with the local community is a basic prerequisite for the proper planning and implementation of interventions that respond to the real needs of citizens.
Concluding his visit, the Regional Governor, Mr. Christodoulos Topsidis, stated that "beyond the projects, what I take away from today's visit are the people of Samothrace. Their warm hospitality, their love for their place and their optimism are the greatest strength of the island."
