SUMMARY: Update on the operation of the factories of the Greek Sugar Industry of Orestiada & Xanthi
In Komotini today, March 21, 2011 , Monday at 6:00 PM , in the conference room of the Regional Unit of Rodopi, in the presence of the Regional Governor Aristides Giannakides, the Deputy Regional Governors: Xanthopoulos Ioannis, Regional Governor of Drama, Nikolaos-Mavranezoulis Georgia, Regional Governor of Evros, Granas Archelaus, Regional Governor of Kavala, Karalidis Fotis, Regional Governor of Xanthi and Damianidis Pavlos, Regional Governor of Rodopi, who were legally summoned in accordance with article 167 par. 4 of Law 3852/2010, the Regional Council of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace convened in a public regular session following the 571/11-3-2011 written invitation of its President, which was served on each Regional Councilor, in accordance with article 167 par. 2 of Law 3852/2010.

The duties of official secretary were performed by the employee of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Ms. Katsikoudi Eleni.
After a quorum was established because 51 members out of a total of 46 members were present, the president of the Regional Council placed four issues for the members of the Regional Council to decide whether or not to discuss them outside the agenda due to urgency.
It was unanimously decided to discuss the off-agenda items.
Introducing the first item off the agenda, the President of the Regional Council brought to the attention of the members of the Regional Council of Eastern Macedonia Thrace for approval or not the following resolution.
The members of the Regional Council of Eastern Macedonia Thrace on Monday, March 21, 2011, after discussing the issue of the operation of the factories of the Greek Sugar Industry, request:
- The continuation of the uninterrupted operation of the factories of Orestiada as a production unit and Xanthi as a standardization unit, as development pillars that have been aligned with our region and its agricultural development.
- Strengthening sugar beet cultivation in order to support agricultural income, utilize existing know-how and limit the loss of valuable foreign exchange from raw material imports.
- Maintaining the ownership status and utilizing human resources.
- Abandoning any idea of selling the remaining sugar quota and strengthening the negotiation of the aid regime for sugar beet cultivation after 2012.

Approves the adoption of the above resolution
Regional Councilors Mr. Zisimou Georgios-Pavlos, Mr. Trellis Christos, Mr. Potolias Christos, Mr. Charitou Dimitrios and Mr. Makris Athanasios voted against the above decision.
Regional Councilor Mr. Tellidis Ioannis abstained from the vote.
This decision was given number 39/2011.
